Monday was the first day we received responses to our Flat Stanley letters and there’s been a steady stream of packages in the mailroom for us since then! We’ve heard about giant crabs at the aquarium in Georgia, mountain biking in Colorado, potatoes and football in Idaho, scuba diving in Florida, farming in Arkansas and Texas, and whale watching in Washington. We’ve heard about many different experiences in New York: hiking along the Erie Canal, the Yankee pinstripes, and even take-out dining! We are blown away by all the thoughtful responses. The kids will be working on thank you letters shortly.

Chinese Brush Painting
Thank you to Laxmi Natarajan for spending the morning teaching us about Chinese brush stroke painting! We learned about different kinds of brushes, techniques, paints, and styles. We loved watching you mix paint chips, roll your brush to change thickness, and create beautiful, natural plum blossoms and branches. After the demonstration, students broke into groups to look at books and artwork for inspiration, practice calligraphy letters, and paint their own spring scene in the "spontaneous" brush stroke style using charcoal and paint. It was incredible to watch the calm control used by the children when painting, it was almost like a soothing exercise. The results were stunning!

Weekly Highlights 3/23- Ms. Der Yuen
Spring has sprung! We learned that March 20 was the vernal equinox, where the length of the day was about equal to the length of the night. We also went on a Spring Search around school, looking for signs of springs: bees, butterflies, buds, baby animals, and baseballs!
We’ve also heard back from some of our friends and family that they’ve received the Flat Stanley letters! We are looking forward to receiving mail in the coming weeks. Thank you for helping coordinate!
This morning enjoyed a cultural story telling performance by the Runaway Caboose. The kids howled with laughter at the stories from Ghana, Poland, and the Philippines. When the “train” stopped in the United States to perform a touching rendition of The Giving Tree, one student was even moved to tears. Brynn was chosen from the audience to pull the train whistle and Matt and Riley acted as a swimmer and fisherwoman in a Ghanaian story.
Mihir: I liked everything! More specifically, I liked math, doing our geography test, the spelling test, library, almost finishing cursive, starting “Delaware”, and finishing Stuart Little and Flat Stanley.
Brynn: I liked almost finishing cursive- we’ve done every letter but upper case B! I liked finishing Flat Stanley and Stuart Little, PE, the Spring Hunt around campus, when Kayla got our whole team back in Graveyard in PE, and I liked getting the letter from the President most of all.
Brennan: I liked finishing Stuart Little, being on the second to last letter in cursive, writing the Wonder poems, finishing Flat Stanley, and Graveyard in PE.
Kayla: I liked everything! I liked singing “Delaware”, making Wonder poems, our Spring Hunt on the first day of spring, and Stuart Little best.
Matt: I liked PE, library, playing the states game in computers, math, spelling, Spring Hunt, writing Wonder poems, cursive, Barack Obama’s letters, and I’m looking forward to the Runaway Caboose performance. I basically liked everything!
Riley: I liked finishing Flat Stanley, almost finishing cursive, and the letter from Barack Obama. I liked basically everything!
Alex C.: I liked PE, finishing Flat Stanley and Stuart Little, and writing Wonder poems.
Nina: I liked doing my Wonder poem and decorating it, obstacle course and cartwheels in gym, playing Graveyard with Mihir in PE, using nails to make sound in science, and I’m looking forward to the performance this morning.
Maya: I liked making the Wonder poem, learning more upper case letters in cursive, and I’m looking forward to more PE.
Alex L.: I liked almost finishing cursive, Stuart Little, PE, science, Spring Hunt around campus, math, spelling, painting landscapes in art, computers, writing Wonder poems, sending Flat Stanley letters, getting the letter back from the President, Core Knowledge, and I’m looking forward to a performance this morning. I liked everything!
Lindsay: I liked doing Wonder poems and illustrating them, the Spring Hunt around campus, getting letters from the President, PE, hitting nails against tuning forks and pencils in science, and I’m looking forward to the performance in the MUR.
Spencer: I liked Graveyard in PE, writing our Wonder poems, illustrating the poems (especially because I drew King Kong), science, sending off the Flat Stanley letters, almost finishing cursive, getting letters from the President, computers, and I’m looking forward to the performance in the MUR.
Mishal: I liked computers, music, science, PE, the Spring Hunt around campus, and everything else! I am looking forward to the performance in the MUR.

"Delaware" by Perry Como- 2B
2B will be singing “Delaware” by Perry Como at assembly on Thursday, April 19th. It is a fun play on words (slant homophones?) and intro to our fifty states study. It’d be great if you can help your child practice at home (or in the car on the drive to school…). We played it today and the kids got a kick out of trying to identify all the states in the song!

TED-Ed
I am so excited about the newest channel that just launched on YouTube today.... TED-Ed! It's aggregating and sharing high quality teacher lessons. Some of the current content is a bit sophisticated than second grade, but not all- some great discussion prompts. The potential is so inspiring. Perfect after-school rainy day programming- watching "How containerization changed the modern world" with a mug of tea and wet dog at my feet.

World Read Aloud Day
We celebrated World Read Aloud Day collaborating with the Kindergarteners and 4th graders. In cross-grade teams, we read stories aloud together, with the 4th graders leading discussion questions. It was a fresh, fun approach to literature today. We hope you get a chance to read aloud together with you children this evening.

Hope!
We wrote about our hopes and dreams for the future, near and distant. What a range of aspirations!

Weekly Highlights 3/2/12 Mrs. Barulich
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! The students saw the video of, 'Oh, The Places You'll Go' this morning, to honor Dr. Seuss. There is a great message there: choosing friends wisely, knowing the diference between right and wrong and as we get older we all at one time or another find that sometimes, life is not fair, but we soldier on.
It has been an extremely busy yet exciting week. I'm enjoying grading the Civil War Hero reports and we've started reading them aloud to the class with many questions from our audience afterwards. Yesterday we had the privilege of attending the fourth grader's Living Museum. We were able to talk to Jedediah Smith, Amelia Earhart, Joaquin Murrieta and many other colorful characters which made California history what our state is now. I personally never knew that Amelia Earhart flew out of Oakland, California on her last and final flight. We were also treated to the fifth grader's version of the U.S. Constitution or Birdietution as one of the groups called it. We learned about the three branches of government: the legislative, judicial and executive.
1. Madeline - I liked working on our landscapes in art, music, learning more about Guido de Arezzo, the Living Museum, and the U.S. Constitution in Miss Calcagno's classroom. Jedediah Smith, in the Living Museum, even had the bear that bit him with him! Emily Leyfur in 5th grade, drew some wonderful pictures for their Constitution project. I also liked celebrating my birthday with my class.
2. Ivan - I liked the Birdietution in 5th grade. It was funny. I also liked our U.S. States sticker book, learning the song, 'Way Up North to Alaska', while we were in Alaska and Nathan's brother, Liam in the Living Museum.
3. Kenna - I liked music a lot, learning the keys on the staves, the 5th graders Constitution was funny and the Living Museum was really great!
4. Nathan - I really liked the Living Museum, my brother, Joaquin Murrieta and Amelia Earhart were cool! I also liked the US Constitution project that the 5th graders did and finishing my report on Abraham Lincoln.
5. Aidan - I liked George Hearst and Leland Stanford in the Living Museum, I also liked the computer videos of China and the Birdietution in 5th grade.
6. Vicki - I like the new music teacher's voice, P.E., art and doing the hula when we were in the state of Hawaii. We weren't really in Hawaii, but we were learning about that state!
7. Renee - I liked the stickers in our State Book and learning about the states. I also liked doing our landscapes in art, the new music teacher's piano, taking my science quiz and doing the hula when we were learning about Hawaii.
8. Stefan - I always like P.E. and playing Graveyard! I also liked the Living Museum, Jedediah Smith travelled a lot! And I liked taking my quiz in science.
9. Liam - I liked estimating in math this week, the new song at assembly, reading my report on Frederick Douglas to the class, the Living Museum, learning and watching the videos of each state that we are learning about and art.
10. Oliver - I liked taking my science quiz. I am happy that Mrs. Wendlandt gave us plenty of time to take it. I also liked P.E., art and learning about the states.
Rohan, we hope that you are enjoying your time with your grandparents. We missed you today.
