Music Videos

Check out the karaoke videos from our trip to the Children's Creativity Museum from a few weeks ago!  The kids had fun selecting band names, picking music selections, and choosing a background for the green screen- then they busted out some serious dance moves!  Enjoy!

Fifty, Nifty United States!

We are beginning our study of the 50 states and capitals that will last through the spring.  The children will be bringing home the note below outlining our study and important test dates.  We will be learning through music, puzzles, maps, interactive media, games, reading, research, writing, and workbooks.  If you have additional resources you'd like to share, we always welcome them!
Happy travels!

Self-control/cognitive development article

I hope you are enjoying the beginning of break!  I enjoyed leisurely reading the New York Times this morning wanted to share an interesting article about self-control in children, including its importance, varying cultural perspectives, and teaching it.  It's part of a debate surrounding "Bringing Up Bebe", a French answer to last year's "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother".  The article is billed as an "American" response written by neuroscientists at Princeton.

Here are couple excerpts that I found particularly resonating:

"Effective approaches for building self-control combine fun with progressively increasing challenges. Rather than force activities onto an unwilling child, take advantage of his or her individual tendencies. When children develop self-control through their own pursuit of happiness, no parental hovering is required. Find something that the child is crazy about but that requires active effort. Whether it’s compiling baseball statistics or making (but not passively watching) YouTube videos, passionate hobbies build mental staying power that can also be used for math homework.

Play allows children to practice skills that are useful in adult life. Young children build self-control through elaborate, imaginative games like pretending to be a doctor or a fireman...

The connection between self-control and social skills seems to be a two-way street. Helping children to identify their emotions and think through possible consequences before reacting improves self-control, in the classroom and at home. According to an analysis of 213 studies involving more than 270,000 students from kindergarten through high school, programs to enhance social and emotional development accelerate school achievement as much as interventions targeted at academic subjects."

Weekly Highlights 2/17/12 Mrs. Barulich

Dear Parents,
We hope that you enjoy your time off during the President's Day holiday. We've been busy conferencing with each one of the students and trying to have them grasp what it is that they are taking away with them in researching their Civil War figure. One compared Lincoln having a marriage and four sons to that of Mohandas Gandhi. Another related how Frederick Douglas was taught to read and write by his master's wife, which lead to his success in writing a story about his life and encouraging President Lincoln to end slavery at the time of their meeting. Also, while Grant was a poor student at Westpoint and Lee graduated second in his class also at Westpoint, it was Grant who lead the North to their final victory and to the end of the Civil War.

We also discussed our school year in terms of fractions. As of March 8th, we will have been in school two-thirds of the school year. While many were sad, I reminded them that it has gone by fast because we have enjoyed so much of our learning. The plays, plane flights, field trips and reports are just part of this second grade journey. This week we have all started multiplication and have almost mastered all of the upper case cursive letters, two biggies in our second grade curriculum. They have both been received with much enthusiasm.

Rohan - I liked our Valentine's Day party, playing Pass the Parcel was a lot of fun. I liked making the butter in science, music,
multiplication and P.E.

Stefan - I liked the new music teacher, science, working on my report of Robert E. Lee, the Valentine's Day party was great and writing my letter to President Obama. I can't believe he authorized the sale of horse meat.

Liam - I liked working on my report of Frederick Douglas, he had a sad life in the beginning. I liked making the butter in science, our Valentine's Day party, playing Pass the Parcel and decorating my heart shaped sugar cookie. I had two!

Ivan - I liked performing our Gandhi presentation for the visitors, the Valentine's Day party was a lot of fun and making butter from whipping cream in science.

Oliver - I liked working on my first draft of President Lincoln with Mrs. Barulich. Boy, is it long! I also liked the Valentine's Day party, making the butter in science and performing for the visitors.

Nathan - I liked wearing my Shark's hat today for Free Dress, working on my President Lincoln report. He went through a lot in his life. It's funny that he kept his important notes in his top hat! I also liked the Valentine's Day party.

Aidan - I liked having my mom and Avery here for the Valentine's Day party! Everything was so good. The game and decorating our sugar cookies. I also liked the Gandhi presentation and the new music teacher!

Madeline - I LOVED the new music teacher. She is teaching us new notes and told us a story about Weedel that was so funny!
I also liked the Valentine's Day party, making the butter in science and the Gandhi presentation for the visitors.

Kenna - I really liked our Valentine's Day party! The sugar cookies were so good and playing Pass the Parcel was a lot of fun. I also liked making butter in science and our new music teacher!

Vicki - I liked everything this week! The Valentine's Day party was great! My mommy made the best cookies! I also liked doing the Gandhi presentation and making the butter in science.

To Renee: We are so happy that you are enjoying France with your family. Tell us about the Mona Lisa, what REAL french crepes taste like and just how tall is the Eiffel Tower! Oui?

Weekly Highlights 2/17- Ms. Der Yuen

In honor of Presidents’ Day, we learned about the history of the holiday (did you know it used to be called Washington’s Birthday?) and a few other presidents. We also learned about some of the responsibilities of the president, which formed a great foundation for writing letters to President Obama. They developed letter writing skills and wrote about an issue of concern, ranging from protecting endangered animals to reducing pollution to increasing computers in school and spreading acting classes in schools. It was wonderful to see the kids excited about exercising their rights to voice their concerns as citizens. We are mailing them today and keeping our fingers crossed that we receive a response!

Thank you to all the chaperones who joined us on our field trip the Children’s Creativity Museum. The kids created clay blob characters to use in stop-motion animation. Their productions lasted between 10-30 seconds, including flying, dancing, jumping, slithering, and bouncing blobs! They also had to invent tools to help them solve tricky problems using assorted objects such as toilet paper rolls, bottle caps, and paper clips. Among the contraptions were a slingshot to tame a dragon in a grocery store parking lot and a dolphin trap to lure other sea creatures to rescue someone stranded at sea. They also got to do karaoke against a green screen, which is making me smile just thinking about their performances! All the clay animation and karaokes videos were given to me on a DVD format that can’t be shared, so they are sending differently formatted files so I can distribute them to you. In the meantime, Dan Avida kindly filmed (and gently edited) a couple karaoke performances for your entertainment (will also post links on the blog):
