Weekly Highlights 2/17- Ms. Der Yuen

In honor of Presidents’ Day, we learned about the history of the holiday (did you know it used to be called Washington’s Birthday?) and a few other presidents. We also learned about some of the responsibilities of the president, which formed a great foundation for writing letters to President Obama. They developed letter writing skills and wrote about an issue of concern, ranging from protecting endangered animals to reducing pollution to increasing computers in school and spreading acting classes in schools. It was wonderful to see the kids excited about exercising their rights to voice their concerns as citizens. We are mailing them today and keeping our fingers crossed that we receive a response!

Thank you to all the chaperones who joined us on our field trip the Children’s Creativity Museum. The kids created clay blob characters to use in stop-motion animation. Their productions lasted between 10-30 seconds, including flying, dancing, jumping, slithering, and bouncing blobs! They also had to invent tools to help them solve tricky problems using assorted objects such as toilet paper rolls, bottle caps, and paper clips. Among the contraptions were a slingshot to tame a dragon in a grocery store parking lot and a dolphin trap to lure other sea creatures to rescue someone stranded at sea. They also got to do karaoke against a green screen, which is making me smile just thinking about their performances! All the clay animation and karaokes videos were given to me on a DVD format that can’t be shared, so they are sending differently formatted files so I can distribute them to you. In the meantime, Dan Avida kindly filmed (and gently edited) a couple karaoke performances for your entertainment (will also post links on the blog):
