Dear Parents,
We hope that you enjoy your time off during the President's Day holiday. We've been busy conferencing with each one of the students and trying to have them grasp what it is that they are taking away with them in researching their Civil War figure. One compared Lincoln having a marriage and four sons to that of Mohandas Gandhi. Another related how Frederick Douglas was taught to read and write by his master's wife, which lead to his success in writing a story about his life and encouraging President Lincoln to end slavery at the time of their meeting. Also, while Grant was a poor student at Westpoint and Lee graduated second in his class also at Westpoint, it was Grant who lead the North to their final victory and to the end of the Civil War.
We also discussed our school year in terms of fractions. As of March 8th, we will have been in school two-thirds of the school year. While many were sad, I reminded them that it has gone by fast because we have enjoyed so much of our learning. The plays, plane flights, field trips and reports are just part of this second grade journey. This week we have all started multiplication and have almost mastered all of the upper case cursive letters, two biggies in our second grade curriculum. They have both been received with much enthusiasm.
